Getting pupils to school safely and on time, every single day, is one of the most important jobs in transport. For headteachers, school business managers and local authority transport teams, choosing an operator for school contract coach hire isn’t just about price. It’s about trust, safeguarding, reliability and how well the operator communicates when things don’t go to plan.
Hunters Executive Coaches runs school and college contracts across Central Scotland from our base in Tullibody, Clackmannanshire. Here’s what we believe schools and councils should expect from any contract operator, and how we deliver it.
Safeguarding comes first
Any operator carrying children and young people should be able to show you exactly how they keep them safe. At Hunters:
- Every driver on our school and college contracts is a member of the PVG scheme, Disclosure Scotland’s Protection of Vulnerable Groups check. This is mandatory for all our education work, with no exceptions.
- All non-service vehicles are fitted with individual passenger seatbelts on every seat.
- Internal CCTV is fitted across our education fleet, giving an extra layer of security for pupils and drivers.
Approved by the councils you work with
Local authority approval tells you an operator has already been checked against the standards councils expect. Hunters is approved under both the Stirling Council and Clackmannanshire Council PASS schemes, and we’re one of very few operators to hold both.
Compliance and maintenance you can rely on
A contract operator should be fully compliant with Traffic Commissioner for Scotland regulations and able to show how its vehicles are looked after. We maintain and test every vehicle at our own DVSA-approved testing station in Tullibody, so maintenance isn’t left to chance or squeezed in around someone else’s schedule.
Our fleet includes Euro 6 compliant vehicles and our new 100% electric Yutong GTe14 coaches, which can help councils and schools meet sustainability and net zero commitments in their procurement.
Reliability on every route, every day
School contract coach hire is all about consistency. You should expect agreed pick-up times that are kept, drivers who know the route and the pupils’ needs, and a plan for when a vehicle or driver is unavailable. With a fleet of 40 vehicles, we have the depth to cover breakdowns and absences without leaving pupils standing at the stop.
Clear communication
Disruption happens, whether it’s bad weather, road closures or a breakdown. What matters is how quickly you hear about it and what the operator does next. You should have a named contact, a clear process for reporting delays to the school, and straightforward answers when you ask a question. That’s how we work with every school and council we serve.
Flexibility when your needs change
Rolls change, timetables change and new routes come up mid-year. A good contract operator will adjust with you rather than making every change a battle. Our contract coach hire arrangements can be reviewed and adjusted as your requirements change.
More than the daily run
Once an operator knows your school, it makes sense to use them for more than the daily route. We also provide transport for school trips, educational visits, sports fixtures and college events, like our recent school trip to Solsgirth Home Farm in Dollar, so you deal with one trusted team.
Questions to ask any contract operator
- Are all your drivers PVG scheme members?
- Do all your vehicles have individual passenger seatbelts?
- Is CCTV fitted on the vehicles used for school work?
- Which council approval schemes are you approved under?
- How and where are your vehicles maintained and tested?
- What happens if a vehicle breaks down or a driver is off sick?
- Who is our named contact, and how will you tell us about delays?
- Can the contract be adjusted if our numbers or routes change?
We’re happy to answer every one of these for your school or authority.
